Day Four: Raw Sewage

4 Mar

I went down to the basement to put a broken storm window away and found quite a bit of water on the floor. I’d had a leaking pipe that the plumber was planning to fix while he was working on this project, so I thought it was from that. Nope, it was sewage backing up from the main drain pipe and gurgling up through a slop sink. Gross and also disgusting. Apparently there was a ton of broken cast iron bits and also hair and God only knows what else (rats maybe?) stuck in the pipe. They cleared it out and now it should be okay. No photos, because I’m not taking photos of raw sewage, thanks very much. Use your imagination.

That sounds horrific. I hope there wasn’t too much damage and that it cleaned up nicely!

It was probably more horrific for the guys doing the work. I was just worried it was going to cost a million dollars. It’s resolved now — it was some pipe debris stuck in there I guess. I’m sooo glad it wasn’t worse (or filled with rats or something horrid).

Just when you think renovations can’t get any more complicated…

Well, it could have been a lot worse, it was just some pieces of pipe stuck in there. And now all waste should flow happily out to the sewer.
